The author has clearly made a significant effort not only to collate information on a huge number of different products available to the modeler, but also to try out many of them. The products are logically grouped together in chapters, for example trees, roads, and snow. There's plenty of step-by-step illustrations of the products in use, and advice on combining products. Quality comes at a price, and the author has plenty of tips on when to use the cheaper products, and how to maximise the impact of the expensive products whilst using them sparingly.
My only disappointment is that having tried so many products, the author does not share the benefit of his practical experience with us. For example, there are sixteen products from seven suppliers listed for creating water effects from lakes to icicles. We get no clue how easy or hard it is to achieve the desired outcomes.
I'll be dipping into this book many times over the coming months. It will be a reference for what is available and possible, and a source of inspiration.
scenic modelling July 27, 2010 Mrs. L. C. Eastham (Wigan) This is a fantastic book if you want to design railway scennery, it has a list of manufacturers who you can buy things from and has clear pictures and information on how to make features for your track. It is a book that you can keep going back to and won't date.

Extract from book introduction:
"The purposes of this book are fourfold:
To show readers what scenic products are available.
To demonstrate some simple techniques showing how the products can be used quickly and easily.
To offer ideas that you may want to incorporate on your layout.
To show how making scenery really is fun."
is this a woodland scenics manual April 16, 2010 A. Butler (Coventry, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
the title implies a book about how to build model railway scenery. it doesn't say that you need to invest in woodland scenics products entirely.
what it does do, is that it explains things very clearly and very well, good photos and diagrams
based around a single manufacturers products for too much of the explanations for my mind
perhaps when I'm richer (a lot richer) I'll be able to buy the recommended products, but not today.
