| Customer Reviews: You have to be keen on American railroads April 6, 2009 zippy (UK) Another railway plan book more suitable to N or Z guage model railways as most of the layouts are rather large. Alternatively this is an excellent inspiration to anyone making layouts with software, such as Trainz, where layout scale and size is of no real consequence.
An inspiring book April 5, 2008 Mr. R. Croft (Tring (Uk)) Unlike the first reviewer of this book my needs were different. After years involved with a very big OO Garden layout I`ve now switched to O/On30 using US railroad practice so I found this book extremely thought provoking. It was full of ideas I`d not considered and highlights the different methods used by American railroads as opposed to their British counterparts. This is my first book on the subject with others yet to be acquired as my O/On30 layout is still in the planning stage. I`ve not had the book long but even now I still find new things every time I pick it up. If you`re going into railroading then I recommend this book as it`s a good read. I could pick holes but generally the book meets my needs ...................
Disappointing November 5, 2005 dubdee1000 (wigan) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This booked is US based and the theme is heavy throughout. Doubtless it could be adapted to suit British layouts, but you may wish to cut the middleman and go straight to a UK based book if the British scene is your thing. However, the biggest drawback is that many of the plans are simply that - plans. They may be coloured to show trees, rivers etc, but there are no 3D diagrams and only a handful of photos. Some of the plans are extremely complex and only really suitable for club modellers and to be fair, the book makes this point. Perhaps my criticism is harsh, but as a potential modeller looking for some inspiration to building a layout, i found this book a little lacking
