This was excellent value for money and made my Xmas to see my father-in-law's face when he realised I'd managed to find the book he'd been after to "complete" his love of his model railway.

A must for every beginner. It clears a lot of terms in terms of hobby. In other words concepts behind this hobby are easier to understand. Can be used as a guide line material. The ideas are clear, crisp and concise.
Very Limited August 30, 2008 M. G. Chisholm (UK) 28 out of 29 found this review helpful
Basically an advertisment for Hornby railways and their stock. Okay, I know that it does say Hornby, but the implication is that it is a bit of a guide to building a model railway that one can use to create something special. This is not the case at all. Whilst each topic is covered - stock, layout, scenery and buildings, there is nothing in any depth that after an initial read hasn't been absorbed. It would be very little use as a reference book for techniques or a book that you would constantly refer back to as required. Nope. This is a simple taster book aimed at young folk who are just getting an itch to build. Well produced and very glossy, but overall, not that useful.
